Department of Music Current Position Vacancies
Position: The University of South Alabama Department of Music invites applications for a full- time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Music in Clarinet, starting August 15, 2026.
Qualifications: Earned terminal degree required in clarinet performance or equivalent field. ABDs near the completion of their degree program will be considered, but an earned DMA, PhD, or DM degree is required at the time of the appointment. Candidates should have artist-level performing skills on clarinet and demonstrate the ability to successfully teach the instrument. Candidates should show potential to successfully teach and recruit applied clarinet students at the collegiate level and have significant performance experience at the regional and national levels. Candidates should be actively involved in clarinet-related organizations and maintain an active schedule of performances and scholarly activities.
Responsibilities: Teach clarinet, including studio classes. Direct the clarinet ensemble. Coach woodwind ensembles. Teach the clarinet portion of woodwind methods. Recruit and build the university’s clarinet program. Additional teaching in other areas will depend on the strengths of the candidate; possibilities include courses in music business, music theory, music technology, music education, or music history. Perform with the faculty Woodwind Ensemble. Contribute to the scholarly advancement of the field through research and/or creative activities. Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.

The University of South Alabama Department of Music invites applications for a full-time (nine-month), tenure-track Assistant Professor or Associate Professor of Music, starting August 15, 2026.
Qualifications: Earned doctorate in music education or related terminal degree (D.M.A. or D.M. in choral conducting or Ph.D. in education) with a strong background in choral music education required for a tenure-track appointment. ABDs near the completion of their degree program will be considered; however, the terminal degree must be conferred before August 15, 2026. Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years of successful public school teaching experience as a choral music educator and hold appropriate teaching certification. Effective knowledge of choral methods and techniques, vocal/choral pedagogy, classroom strategies, and understanding of 21st century classroom technologies are also required. Candidates with experience in teaching elementary music methods, including Orff and Kodaly, will be strongly considered. Candidates should have a successful record of recruiting at the secondary and collegiate levels. Rank at the time of hire will be determined by collegiate level teaching experience.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will teach courses in choral music education for undergraduate and graduate students and conduct the USA Concert Choir. Additional courses in related areas may be assigned dependent on the successful candidate’s expertise.
Additional responsibilities will include academic advising and mentoring choral music education students, supervision of student teachers, and developing and maintaining productive relationships with area choral music educators. Coordination with the music education faculty and the College of Education in maintaining ongoing review of curriculum and certification standards, and active recruitment of students for the undergraduate and graduate programs in choral music education will be expected. Contribution to the scholarly advancement of the field through research and/or creative activities is encouraged. Service on departmental, college, and university committees and active participation in respected state, regional, and national organizations is also expected.
